DESCRIPTION: This course is for Fire Service personnel preparing for a Driver/Operator promotional examination, preparing for the State of Florida Driver/Operator examination, for those personnel seeking to improve their skills. The course will consist of four-eight hour days.
Day 1 will serve a a theoretical review, and will begin with a sample written test. The written test and the accompanying review will cover hydraulics theory and formulas, the relationship between flow and pressure, and a review of calculating friction loss in various size hoses and hose lay-outs. students should provide a calculator with square root function.
Textbook is recommended for reference, but not required: FSFC Fire Service Hydraulics, 1991 and or IFSTA "Pumping Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook, 2nd Ed.
Day 2, 3 & 4 will serve as a practical review and will consist of vehicle familiarization, vehicle operation, supplying water to an apparatus, and supplying pre -connected lines and standpipe systems. Students must provide NFPA and ANSI compliant helmet and gloves. Proper attire (long pants, suitable footwear) is required for participation in water pumping exercises.
